That part of the hole is very unstabel and they probaly had trouble getting the hole clean and got stuck, very normal,
One thing you where right about is yes they would be stuck first and Cameron been a very professional made a slip
As far as using old pipe you are getting further disrespect on having any knowledge all drill strings are pre tested and scoped etc. before a holestarts.
Common good drilling practice is to case unstable formations or they will haunt you till the hole is done
