BHP'S 4TH Quarter falls 18%

"BHP Billiton reported that production at its Ekati mine in Canada fell 18 percent year on year to 740,000 carats in the fourth quarter ending June 30, 2010. Output dropped due to lower average grade achieved at the mine, the company explained. Production for the full fiscal year fell 5 percent to 3.05 million carats.

“During the year a higher proportion of ore was sourced from the Fox pit at Ekati as mining of the higher grade Panda underground was completed,” BHP Billiton stated in its group production report."


Diamonds aren't forever

The gems have bought a lot in Botswana, the most well-off country in sub-Saharan Africa. The question is, what's next?

"But, as with oil in Canada, the easy to get at and thus most profitable sources of this rich resource are being depleted. So, barring a big new find, the government's diamond revenues, which are already down, are doomed to drop sharply in as little as eight years."
