BAE Systems in Sealy was awarded a new $629 million contract from U.S. Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) Joint Program Office (JPO) on Sept. 1.
BAE will upgrade 1,700 Caiman MRAP vehicles for the company according to the agreement.
The upgraded MTVs, Multi-Terrain Vehicles, will have improvements such as, improved armored capsules, high-power automotive power trains, enhanced monolithic floor, strengthened frame and effective blast absorbing seats.
The enhancements are expected to provide greater protection and mobility in challenging and dangerous environments.
“The Caiman MTV meets the urgent and enduring needs of our troops for greater mobility and survivability,” said Dennis Morris, president, BAE Systems Global Tactical Systems.
“The Caiman MTV is a very adaptable configuration that can be customized to meet a variety of missions, and we look forward to getting these to the field.”
The contract is good news for BAE employees.
BAE announced last month that they will be laying off approximately 1300 employees, due to the loss of a $3 billion U.S. Army contract to produce FMTV combat trucks.
“This is great news in that it stabilizes employment at 1,400 people into the end of 2012,” said Lance LaCour, president and ceo of the Katy Area Economic Development Council.
