Excellent post Naterey.

There are two different trends in the photovoltaic industry.  Reduce costs in mass production and to increase efficiency.

Indeed, the triple junction cells (Sharp/Spectrolab) in a concentrator setup cost $8-10/cm2 based on Gallium/exotic compounds.... if you do the math the cost of these panels is astronomical.  They are not suited to mass production.  They are meant for specialty applications... ie space/military. The goal in the space photovoltaic industry is to increase efficiency irrespective of cost.  The reason... the cost of launching something into space.

Sharp has a commercial silicon cell in mass production with 12-14% efficiency. In terrestrial applications the goal is to reduce costs.

A tandem silicon cell in a concentrator setup is theorized to be 60+ efficient.   A silicon tandem cell will allow increased efficiency with the benefit of reduced costs, the ability of mass production, and the use of a readily available compound - silicon.
