The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday, Sept. 29, editionthat Guyana Goldfields moved to the top of the list of potential takeovertargets on Tuesday. The Post's Barry Critchley writes that an unnamed sourcesays Agnico-Eagle Mines is a possibly suitor for Guyana. Agnico-Eagle has amarket capitalization of almost $13-billion. It had a large team looking overGuyana's operations in the South American country. Such a move would presumablybe a necessary step before launching an offer for the company. Guyana shareshave risen more than 60 per cent in the past three months. Its market cap is nowmore than $800-million. An unnamed analyst says has not heard of Agnico-Eagle'splans. Nonetheless, the analyst says Guyana Goldfields -- which has two majorareas of interest and received environmental approval for its flagship AuroraGold project Tuesday -- will not be an independent company by the end of theyear. He says, "Guyana is definitely one of my favourite takeover candidates."He pegs Iamgold and Newmont as two of the "most logical candidates" for takingover Guyana. He notes that both miners "are established in the Guyana shield andboth have expertise in those parts."
