Most people who are using an ipad would be carrying a cell phone with them anyway (as will people who will have the Playbook)...so your comparison to laptops & printers is bunk.
To compare a 5 year old device to something brand new is pretty ballsy. How about comparing your 5 year old Mac to a brand new IBM.
