You're straying into a philosophical minefield with your talk about letter writing as being "self serving." Of course it's self-serving, everything on the planet is about self-interest; politicians work for the electors because of self interest, voters vote for specific politicians on the basis of self-interest. The entire capitalist system is based on self-interest. I would guess that almost every letter or email a politician gets is based on self-interest; every request for a zoning change, every request for a change to the EI program, every request for government support - self-serving. I really don't think any politician will say, "Oh, this email must be from a shareholder so therefore I can ignore it because it's self-serving." Whether or not the number of letters and emails will reach the critical mass to effect a change may be debatable but there certainly is the potential for a benefit from them.
