Gov’t to invest $356 million to develop northern tourism route

Peru’s government is planning to invest 1.0 billion soles ($356million) over the next 3 years in the country’s northern regions oninfrastructure to develop tourism, Foreign Trade and Tourism MinisterEduardo Ferreyros said.

Government tourism promotion agency PromPeru previously announcedthat it would start a marketing campaign in 2011 to promote tourism tothe Moche Route, which includes sites in Lambayeque and La Libertad.

Theintention is to develop route as the country’s second biggest touristdestination thanks to historical and archaeological attractions.

“We are promoting and working on the development of the northernroute, the Moche route. We are going to invest in the next 3 years some1.0 billion soles to generate the necessary infrastructure and provideincentives for the private sector to invest in hotels and restaurants,” state news agency Andina reported Ferreyros as saying.

One of the top attractions in the north is Chan Chan, which was thecapital of the Chimu kingdom some 500 years ago. The city was thelargest pre-Columbian city in the Americas before it was overtaken bythe Incas.

Peru’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry, along with PromPeru andleaders in Peru’s travel industry are working together to put Chan Chanand Tschudi, El Brujo and the Temples of the Sun and Moon where theyrightfully belong, on par with Machu Picchu, and even the pyramids ofEgypt.

To make this plan a reality, Peru has announcedit will invest 1,168,698,274 soles, or more than $417 million, over thenext two years to improve roads, construct new luxury hotels anddevelop archaeological sites into self-sustaining tourist attractions.

The goal is to make this “Moche Trail” into the second most visitedtourist route after Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
