If the gap is not filled all the money could leak out of the chart adn it could turn in to a flat line .....:) 


Once apon a time someone noticed that stock prices often return to  fill the gap before proceeding  ...  and now it is so entrenched  belief that investors stay on the outside until  the gap  fills so the old wives tail becomes self fulfilling.
 

There are many examples  of unfilled gaps  in hot stocks that get lost in the shuffle.
