In business a subsiduary is an entity controlled by another seperate higher entity.  Control can be achieved in many ways as in contractual or higher entity owning shares in sub etc.

Please take note I did not say the sub is owned by the higher entity.  AGAIN I DID NOT SAY THE HIGHER ENTITY OWNS THE SUB!!!!!

The drilling company here is an operating sub and not a non-operating sub.

Unless one knows who owns the sub one can, unlike you, not assume who owns it.
