ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Three oil companies exploring Newfoundland's offshore are putting a rig-sharing deal into effect that the provincial government says is good news for continued exploration.
Husky Energy, Statoil Canada and Suncor Energy have an agreement with drilling contractor TransOcean for the use of the Henry Goodrich semi-submersible drilling unit.
Natural Resources Minister Shawn Skinner says the three-year deal is a positive development because rig-sharing agreements encourage continued exploration.
He says they enable companies to pursue drilling and development programs that could otherwise prove too costly to be commercially viable.
Suncor Energy has just started drilling a second exploration well and Husky Energy is pursuing further development opportunities.
Statoil Canada plans to drill a delineation well for the Mizzen discovery and an exploration well in the southern Grand Banks.
