RE: Logging the current sectionThey have to log the section to know what formation they are in. Certain layers or formations (usually non oil) are very distinct on the logs. They can then compare that distinct formation to the logs from a well hundreds of kilometres away and that will tell them where the formation is in there well, from which they can judge where they are in relation to the target formation.

This is just a red herring trying to mislead you. The Shiranish probably wouldn't be at 2600 metres at any other wells in neighbouring sections, could be much higher or lower. But the Sharnish may be 100m below the distinct indicator formation in the neighbouring well, so it is a very good chance it will be 100m below it in the QD well.
