Kuwait invites clean-up bids

Kuwait Oil Company is set to invite bids for soil remediation work as itembarks on a multi-billion dollar clean-up of the oil lakes left by SaddamHussein’s army in 1991. Further work may be imminent.

January 14th weekly edition that the Kuwait Oil Company ("KOC") willissue its first set of tenders for about $200 million of soilremediation work later this month or in early February. These tenderswill be followed later this year by even bigger soil remediation and oilrecovery contracts for the clean-up of the Kuwait Oil Lakes left bySaddam Hussein's army in 1991. According to industry sources noted inthe article, these contracts "will involve the biggest clean-upoperation in the world to put right the damage caused when retreatingIraqi troops torched Kuwait's oilfields." The article notes that themassive clean-up of the Kuwait Oil Lakes would cost about $3.5 billion,funded out of the United Nations war reparation funds, and entailsdecades of work.
