shorts . . .

shorts . . .. . . are methodical if nothing else.  They wait for the inevitable 'after main news vacuum' and then give the illusion of support in order to catch the uptick short sell.  Then, slowly over days, walk the bid down to their desired level.  At least that has been the pattern here.
