Ontario halts offshore wind energy projectsLONDON, Ont. - The Ontario government has abruptly changed direction on offshore wind energy, halting proposed projects.
The Liberal government said Friday it "is not proceeding withproposed offshore wind projects while further scientific research isconducted."
No approvals for offshore projects have yet been issued and "nooffshore projects will proceed at this time," the government said in astatement from the premier's office.
Premier Dalton McGuinty's government has come under sharp attack fromopponents of wind turbine farms, especially in rural areas alongstretches of Great Lakes identified as having the potential to power theprovince's alternative energy plans.
Projects have been proposed along Lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario.
