Power Knee Commercially Available For Use in Europ
Tuesday, March 1, 2011
Touted as the world's first and only motorized prosthetic knee, Iceland and Orange County, California-based Ossur announced that the company's Power Knee prosthetic is now available to above-knee amputees in Europe and the United States.
If you recall from our previous coverage of the Power Knee, it's a unique prosthetic with sensor and actuators, coupled with artificial intelligence. These two features allow the Power Knee to not only move naturally with the user's gait, but to also learn the user's walking style. The result is that the Power Knee is better able to mimic natural walking with less effort by the patient.
From the recent press release:
Conventional prostheses require an amputee to consciously move them by directly engaging the anatomical structures of their remaining limb. In comparison, POWER KNEE is the first prosthetic knee designed to function as an integrated extension of its user, using battery-powered capabilities to address the lost muscle capability and asymmetrical movement often found in people with limb loss.
