RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: No Change 4 PTQIn today's world there is no risk free mining operation - in Canada for example there are many disputes with various groups particularly with First Nations with respect mining development - just look at BC and all the land claims issues there - if memory serves me correctly there was a company that was trying to advance a large copper project in north central BC that got shut-down by First Nations - Taesko I think is the name - but don't quote me....
What I think is important in mining int he 21st century is that if you have communities on side - the politicians keep their noses out of it as it becomes too risky for them. The communities in the region can't stand politicians - they see them all as corrupt - so its good to have the people deal with the government as much as possible....
One of the things I look at when I invest in places outside of traditional mining regions is this - do the companies have the support of the local communities?
This is key for me - I invested in Ecuador a few years ago and I did well with a copper company in the south because they had the support of a large group of Indigenous peoples and latino people... When I saw this - I knew the people would protect the project and pressure the government - this is exactly what happened and as a result my investment did very well...
With respect to PTQ - I think its a good project for the following reasons:
1. There is gold there and they are looking for more
2. They are producing gold and they are working to produce more
3. The mine is set-up for expansion
4. Communities support the project - this is key!!!!!
5. Richard Fifer - he is a hard nosed politician who can get things done in Panama
6. The government is not looking for anymore fights after getting beaten up on the Inmet deal
7. The PRD (the largest opposition party) are pro-mining albeit not pro-Martinelli - remember they were the government before Martinelli and they supported mining
8. The whole mining code changes had nothing at all to do with our project
The best plan for PTQ is to continue to work with its workers and communities - they should also commit a few more dollars on educating the people in the region about the benefits of mining as people in Panama have little to no information on responsible mining.
