This was back when crappy management was running the show at GGC , R.Gardner and company. A lot of really bad decisions were made and nearly put GGC into the dumpster. By the way i  would guess the short position is simply some hedging by a few that got in the big financing after the merger. Not everyone believes silver going straight up. My guess is that we could see a pullback to the 30$ range before it heads over 40$ sometime this year.  Volatility in the Crimex ( comex) silver price is something to behold, wont be uncommon to see 2$ swings in the price on the comex in one trading session. JPM and company will work hard at trying to get the huge short position fixed.
