Not sure where you get your cost to do a horizontal well but I have done many of the Bakken wells myself. I won't say who I worked for but as of last October it was costing 1.6- 1.8 million to drill frac and produce a 2 leg horizontal. One cost I did see that could have saved dollars is the rigs they were using. They had a contract with Ensign to work 10 rigs, but the problem was when we had a few different drilling contractors they were drilling these wells 2-3 days faster. They also had the drilling rigs running in the liner which took 24-36hrs and they decided to start using service rigs which were taking most of the time a week or more.
This is just a few things but yes when you are drilling 100's of wells this added up in a hurry.
I can't speak for the Cardium wells as I have not done any.
