While there is no minimum wage in the private sector, aminimum wage in the public sector has been in effect since 1985.According to the U.S. Department of State, however, the minimum wage in thepublic sector, which equaled about US$16 per month in 1996, is insufficient toprovide a decent standard of living for a worker and family. The Office of theStudy of Wages and Other Remunerations, for instance, reports that a family of 5requires a monthly income of US$61 in Ethiopia. Even with 2 minimum wageearners, therefore, a family receives only about half the income needed foradequate subsistence.
