Yes, there have been longstanding problems with the production of Conflict Minerals in the DRC, as alluded to in the article that you posted a link to. More extensive discussion about the Conflict Minerals abuses can be found on the site "Raise Hope For Congo" (

However my understanding is that Banro is firmly committed to being part of the solution, rather than part of the problem. Most of the human rights abuses have been occurring in "artisanal mines", basically, micro operations controlled by criminal gangs and paramilitary groups. Banro's aspiration is to build a professionally managed mine where real jobs are made available to local people. They have had particular concerns to address the problem of violence against women, and to provide work for former artisanal miners. Some info is available at their site:
