At the 2011 AutoRAI in Amsterdam, The Netherlands largest Auto event, Renault Netherlands decided to adopt RFID (Radio Frequency IDentifictaion) technology to create an innovative real time social sharing experience for visitors.
Visitors to the Renault stand received a free RFID card; the card contained a small chip which could hold their Facebook log-in details. Users could then scan their cards at pillars positioned next to Renault cars to like them. By holding the card in front of the pillars a connection was made to the visitors Facebook account, sharing the car on their wall for all their friends to see. This allowed the offline experience of 250,000 guests to be shared in real-time through their Facebook accounts.
RFID technology has been around for the last few years, However it is only recently that manufacturing costs have fallen to the point where these devices can be offered as a ‘throw-away’ device.
