Cost Curve fits nicelyWeighted average copper mine cash costs in 2009 were $2320/t or $1.05/lb. The median cost of production was $2690/t or $1.22/b. The average LME cash price for copper in 2009 was $5150/t or $2.34/lb.

The latest Reuters' poll of metal market analysts shows that the median forecast for average copper prices in 2010 is around $6900/t ($3.12/lb) and $7500/t ($3.40/lb) in 2011.

With the average cost of mines within the top centile of the cost curve just over $3700/t or $1.68/lb, copper mining remained an exceptionally profitable business in 2009. For mines in the lower half of the cost curve margins were very significant.

Countries with significant copper mine production at the lower end of the cost curve in 2009 included Indonesia and Peru, while higher cost production was concentrated in Australia, Argentina and Poland.
