Majnoon
MajnoonSome interesting numbers on Majnoon. Very close to the numbers of the structure on the Vast website.
The super-giant Majnoon oil field is situated in southeast Iraq, in Al-Basrah governorate, extending northerly toward Missan governorate. Located 60 km northwest of Basrah city, the field area lies mostly under man-made islands in the Hawizah marshes, close to the Iran border. The Majnoon structure is a double-plunging symmetrical anticline about 60 km long and 15 km wide, with closure in the order of 400 meters for the middle and early Cretaceous reservoirs.
Discovered in 1976, a total of 24 wells have been drilled in the Majnoon field, with one appraisal well penetrating 14 oil-bearing zones. The first significant oil zone is the late Cretaceous Hartha carbonate formation. Other pay zones include the middle Cretaceous Mishrif and Ahmadi carbonates and the early Cretaceous Nahr Umr and Zubair sandstones and Yamama carbonate formations. The field has been partially developed, with work held up in the 1980s when the area was flooded. However, production from the Majoon field began in 2002 and has continued to-date.
