June 28 (Reuters) - Exfo Inc posted third-quarter results below market expectations, sending its U.S.-listed shares down as much as 16 percent in extended trade.

The Canadian telecom service provider also forecast sales between $62-$67 million and said earnings between
.01-
.05 per share for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011.

Exfo reported net income of $1.7 million, or 3 cents per share, compared with net loss of
.6 million, or 1 cent per share, a year ago.

For the quarter ended May 31, sales rose 21 percent to $67.6 million.

Analysts on average had expected the company to report 8 cents, on revenue of $69.1 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Shares of the company were down at $7.51 in extended trade. They closed at $8.95 on the Tuesday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Amruta Sabnis in Bangalore; Editing by Prem Udayabhanu)
