Global ISPS Embrace Sandvine LTE Solutions
7/12/2011 7:00:04 AM - Market Wire

Network Policy Control Supports Evolving Service Models

WATERLOO, ONTARIO, Jul 12, 2011 (Marketwire via COMTEX News Network) --

Attention Business and Technology Editors

Sandvine, (TSX:SVC)(AIM:SAND) a leading provider of intelligent broadband network solutions for fixed and mobile operators, today announced it is working with global Internet service providers to prepare their networks for upcoming 4G LTE rollouts. Sandvine's network policy control solution for LTE Evolved Packet Core enables operators to address the challenges of unifying disparate technologies within a common access-agnostic policy framework that supports desired service and billing models.

The Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) has reported that twenty operators have commercially launched LTE networks within USA, Europe and Asia, with a total of 208 operators in 80 countries now investing in LTE. Currently, Sandvine is working with four of its national mobile carrier customers on LTE initiatives, one in each major geographic region: North America, South America, Europe and Asia, to demonstrate its traffic monitoring/management, usage management and service creation capabilities within LTE architectures of interoperable multi-vendor components. Given the increased bandwidth capabilities of LTE over 3G, operators are deploying flexible billing options and differentiated speed and quota based tiers to their subscribers.

As part of the LTE standards, systems must be compatible with IPv6 addressing. This accelerates the network migration from IPv4 to IPv6, which gained momentum with the depletion of available IPv4 addresses. Sandvine's Policy Traffic Switch (PTS) product fully supports IPv6, and allows monitoring and management of IPv4 and IPv6 traffic simultaneously, on fixed, mobile or converged networks. The PTS supports stringent mobile requirements, such as high volumes of subscribers with dynamic IP traffic flows, ranging from 10 Gbps to 480 Gbps throughput, and up to 270 million concurrent flows. It features market-leading signalling performance handling more than five times the rate of its competitors for new session rates, and for 3GPP standard Diameter signalling to policy provisioning (PCRF) and online and offline charging systems. These capabilities make it the ideal component within LTE networks for dynamic policy decision and enforcement.

"Sandvine is excited to be supporting the evolution of our customers' networks to LTE", said Don Bowman, CTO, Sandvine. "The breadth of our policy control portfolio supports the operational efficiencies of all-IP LTE deployments. With our integrated system we can leverage application, subscriber, topology and congestion awareness to enable a wide range of usage-based services for the mutual benefit of operators and subscribers."

LTE, the next-generation standard for cellular communications, offers an all-IP architecture, improved spectrum efficiency, increased data rates of up to 100 Mbps download, with reduced latency of less than five milliseconds. For the consumer, LTE benefits include faster connection speeds, higher throughput, greater coverage and improved quality of experience notably for multi-media streaming applications.
