Tethys Petroleum Ltd V.TPL

Alternate Symbol(s):  TETHF

Tethys Petroleum Limited is an oil and gas exploration and production company focused on Central Asia and the Caspian Region with projects in Kazakhstan. Through its subsidiaries, TethysAralGas LLP and Kul-Bas LLP, it operates over four contracts in the North Ustyurt basin to the west of the Aral Sea adjacent to the prolific Pre-Caspian basin. It has a 100% working interest in the Kyzyloi Production Contract (449 square kilometers (km2)), Akkulka Exploration License and Contract (827 km2), Akkulka Production Contract (396 km2) and Kul-Bas Exploration and Production Contract (7,632 km2). The Kul-Bas exploration and production contract area surrounds the Akkulka block, which has an exploration area of over 7,632 km2. Kyzyloi and Akkulka gas development fields are tied into the Bukhara-Urals gas pipeline by an over 56-kilometer pipeline owned and built by the Company. The Doris oil field provides over two oil-bearing zones, the lower zone and an upper, lower cretaceous sandstone zone.

RE: RE: RE: RE: I think

1) First of all, what do you mean by “all of the field” ? The way I picture this is that there’s a ~60 km2 structure but the sand is not evenly distributed all over like a sheet, it’s more like fans or channels that don’t cover the whole structure, see page 14 in the latest presentation for a schematic. What this means in my mind, is that the AK04 and AKD 05 was not optimally placed based on this new concept, they were rather placed optimally based on a structural map. In order to be able to see the sand bodies on (3D) seismic, quite detailed studies (inversion, spectral analysis and AVO techniques) have to be carried out, and this is what the TPL G&G staff have been working on this spring. The next well (AKD-06) will be placed taking this into account. So, answering your question, it’s not likely that one well will be able to “see” the whole “Doris segment” in my mind, there are always faults and facies changes that prevents that. I think it is likely (but this is of course my own views which is based on general knowledge and not TPL data) that within the Doris segment, there are additional volumes, after all 90 MMbbl in place is only around 10-12 km2, whereas that segment looks to be larger (on the map on page 13

2) It is clearly stated “In the AKD04 (Dero) well the Upper Jurassic carbonate interval was targeted here to evaluate whether the oil-water contact would be deeper in this area which is separated from the Doris structure by a fault. However a mixture of oil and water was obtained on test indicating that the well is close to the oil-water contact and that the fault does not seal.” Something lead TPL to believe that the OWC contact would be deeper here compared to the Doris segment, but that was not the case, it was probably the same contact. This in turn leads them to the conclusion that the fault is not sealing, and the Dero segment on the Jurassic level is connected to the Doris segment. It also says they produced a mixture of oil and water, which will obviously be the case if you have a well close to the contact, you will either cone down oil if you are below, or you will cone up water if you are above. There is no doubt in my mind that there is oil updip, the question with the Jurassic is if it is productive with only an acid wash, or if you need heavier artillery. To expand a bit on this, the Jurassic Carb formation is of a completely different nature when it comes to depositional setting, here it is much more likely that it is very extensional, probably over an area that exeeds the greater Doris structure. Just to be clear, there are no fans or anything like that here, the challenge with carbonate formations is the heterogeneity and the apparent lack of fractures in some locations. Yet another nut for TPL to crack…

3) Which area are you referring to? If you’re talking about greater Doris, I think that when the dust settles there could be around 200 MMbbl recoverable (all levels, including Dodone). Obviously, this is not based on a whole lot, given the lack of info from TPL…

Hope it helps,
