RE: RE: RE: RE: RE: FORTRESS SAWMILL AND FORTRESS

According to Domtar’s website, the main reason for shutting down the Lebel saw mill was a lack of wood resources as allocated by Quebec’s authorities.  It seems that the local supply of lumber can feed one mill, but not both.  In a sustained operation (no clear-cutting, but selective logging), one square-kilometer can produce 600 tons of lumber in the North of Quebec.  300,000 tons therefore require a forest base of 500 square kilometers, which is almost the size of Metropolitan Toronto.

It is my understanding that a sawmill is not necessary to operate a Kraft plant or a DP plant.  The wood arrives by monster-truck, cut to 20 feet in length and does then get shredded to smaller bits.  I am not sure where the info of a sawmill in the wood chip stream comes for Thurso, but I am convinced that this info is erroneous.

A sawmill creates dimensional lumber (for the building trade) out of mature trees, while a pulp mill (Kraft of DP) does not need mature trees and is happy with immature second growth, as well as waste from saw mills.

Assuming that Lebel actually arrives in Fortress’ stable, I am absolutely convinced that a sawmill is a hindrance, rather than a help and that it will not be reopened.
