Cloud-Based Multimedia

Cloud-Based Multimedia
Big Industry Names Involved in Cloud-Based Multimedia
Published by J. Angelo Racoma on 22 March, 2011
Delivery of music and other multimedia via the cloud has involved big names lately. Google has been reportedly developing a cloud-based music service for its Android smartphone operating system. This system will enable users to save space on their Android tablets and smartphones by storing multimedia on Google’s servers and pull these on-demand. Apple is likewise reportedly taking iTunes libraries to the cloud after its acquisition of Lala. Micrsoft, having recently announced the end-of-life of its Zune player, is likewise rumored to be developing a cloud-based Zune music service.
The involvement of major industry players seems promising, and the concept of delivering multimedia through the cloud is further supported by the fact that mobile networks are making a big effort to improve their infrastructure, in order to provide faster mobile data speeds. Ensuring fast access will make it easier for users to access their content, and will make sure that service providers will not lose out on a mobile-oriented business model.
Will cloud-based music services replace your trusty iPod soon? Not likely in the next few months, but as mobile data becomes faster, and devices become more sophisticated, this is likely to be a reality. Maybe in five years.
