IDC wins another Award

IDC wins another AwardE-commerce achievers honoured Kristin Goff The Ottawa Citizen Top e-commerce businesses, including some aimed at helping today's youth become tomorrow's dot-com billionaires, were honoured at the .commerce 2000 show in Ottawa. The Canadian Advanced Technology Association Alliance launched a new award for the best e-business enterprises in several categories. Separately, SCOAP, a professional information and management organization, honored 13 Ottawa-area firms for innovation and technology use. A group of McGill University MBA students won $5,000 awarded to the top e-business students, selected by CATA Alliance members for their their e-business. Their U-swap Web site (www.u-swap.com) offers free online classified ads for students. The NRG Group (www.thenrggroup.com) won among e-businesses with less than 100 employees. The firm's Internet incubator for young entrepreneurs helps them launch the next generation of technology companies. The online incubator is the first of its kind in Canada. Two won for companies with more than 100 employees: BCE Emergis Inc. for its e-business solutions for secure transitions over the Internet; and InSystems Technologies Inc. for helping financial services companies improve efficiency and customer service through the Internet. SCOAP honored 13 Ottawa-area companies in four categories for technology related achievements: Best implementation or innovative use of technology: Glebe Apothecary, for its Internet site and marketing; Canadian Blood Services, for its technology systems and services infrastructure; Ottawa Business Journal, for its innovative business news portal; and International Datacasting, for its advanced satellite broadcast service for the Department of Defence for peacekeepers overseas. Best locally developed product or services: ServicePlus Corp., for products to assist service and field repair work; VMI Medical Inc. for its point-of-care clinical information and workflow automation solutions for cardiology; Gallium InterMAPhics for improvements in developing the human interface in defence and air traffic management systems. Best initiative for social or community advancement: Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation for its technology coaches program; Vitesse (Re-skilling) Canada's program to help people upgrade technology skills; Canadian Wildlife Federation and IntoInfo Inc. for its interactive CD learning tool; and Elcombe Systems Limited for its PC Messenger software which provides a portable emergency call button for seniors to get in touch with hospital outreach staff. Best knowledge management innovation: Calian Ltd. for its e-business solutions that help organizations identify and organize disparate pieces of information critical to decisions. Special Award: Solidum Systems Corp., a fabless semiconductor company, for risk innovation. The firm's advanced packet classification technology is used in the creation of powerful, multi-gigabit networks, Internet telephony and other networks.
