China expands nuclear ..

At Yale Environment 360 this week, science writer David Biello writes about the global repercussions of the Fukushima nuclear disaster on the nuclear energy industry. While countries such as Germany, Japan, and Italy are either scrapping plans to build more nuclear reactors or vowing to phase out nuclear power altogether, one country — China — is intensifying its campaign to build more reactors. As Biello explains, China now has 26 nuclear reactors under construction, nearly half of all reactors being built worldwide. Indeed, China has become the world’s living laboratory for new nuclear reactor designs. But, Biello writes, this rapid expansion of nuclear power comes amid concerns that China’s enthusiasm for nuclear power may be outpacing its ability to safely operate such a large nuclear industry.
