Those that argue that it serves a purpose in the market, suggest that short selling should curtail bubbles, but instead it is being used a predatory approach to destroy vulnerable companies. If a person is standing on a ledge, they are in a precarious position, but if you give them a shove would you claim that without you around more people would be standing on ledges?
Take away the shorts and people would still have put option - only its much harder to manipulate the market because when the price of a stock is tanking, longs are more likley to sell.
There is no need to allow short selling in the financial markets - and volatility would decrease significantly it were eliminated. Of course eliminating it would mean that guys like Rogers and Soros would have to find more honorable jobs like bank robber or loan shark.
