hi nb,
Da beauty of da Bakken, is that they think the oil is still in this source rock.  That is the rock is a source with high TOC (Total Organic Components) upto 60% by weight, that is not leaked away as da rock doesnot transmit or leak the stuff out.  That is why they got to Frack it.  Compare wit other source rocks that have 5 - 20% TOC.
Therefore it is a oil source rock, that has not leaked to form a reservoir higher in the stratas, as the rock is impermeable.
Therefore, adjacent wells ain't gonna drain any away.
Just da way I see dat!

=======================
Instead of the word porous, I should have used the word permeable.
Porosity tells you how much space is available for fluids;  permeability tells you  the degree to which the porosity is connected - ie. think open cell foam vs closed cell foam.
