Consumers are being warned not to consume a brand of grain-fed veal liver because the product may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said in a release.

The affected veal from White Veal Meat Packers Ltd. was sold between June 1 and 14 in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia.

There have been reported illnesses associated with consumption of the product, which is being voluntarily recalled by the company. Food contaminated with E. coli may not look or smell spoiled. The affected White Valley brand Grain Fed Veal Liver was sold in boxes weighing five kilograms or 25 kilograms.

The warning affects these formats:

  • One individually vacuum-packaged or five individually poly-packed pieces per box with the UPC 90059441201142 and lot number 110601 sold in B.C., Ontario, and Quebec.
  • One individually vacuum-packaged or five individually poly-packed pieces per box with UPC 90059441201142 and lot number 110603 sold in B.C.
  • Five individually poly-packed, one piece per box, with UPC 90059441101145 and lot number 110601 sold in Quebec. (This format is sold as White Valley brand Beef Liver at one retail store, Boucherie Al-Khair, 300 Jean-Talon East, Montreal.)

Retailers should check the lot code on the packaging or with their supplier to determine if they have the affected product.

Retailers may have sliced and sold the veal liver pre-packaged or through the store's meat counter.

Consumers who may have purchased the products and have them in their freezers should contact their retailer to determine if they have the affected product; they are advised not to consume it.

E. coli can cause serious and potentially life-threatening conditions
