The topography is dominated by fault valleys and the rugged ridges of the Barisan Mountains that comprisethe backbone of the island of Sumatra. The climate varies from dry conditions in the temperate pine forests to tropicalconditions in the rainforest, with approximately 2 m average annual rainfall. The land and forest status of this propertyconsists of four types (referenced from Hatfield, 2008a): ‘production forest’, mainly consisting of pine plantation(49%), nature reserve (30%), other land use which is mainly farming and villages (11%) and ‘protected forest’ (11%).(sic, Hatfield, 2008) Abong, the main prospect within the Barisan I Property, lies within pine plantation.The Barisan II Property lies within a similar physiographic setting to Barisan I and hence has a similar climate andland use.
