NR August 30 News Release August 30, 2011 CORTINA FACILITY UPDATE Earthworks Industries Inc.’s (“Earthworks”) Management wishes to update the information on the status of its integrated waste management facility at Cortina in Colusa County, California. As mentioned in Earthworks’ latest Management Discussion and Analysis dated July 29, 2011, we have now responded to all of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) questions over the past 18 months. In providing EPA with the most up to date information available with respect to the design of the waste management facility, the current review will insure that Cortina will not only be one of the most modern designed facilities, but will also set a precedent for all new facilities of this nature. While an Authority to Construct was previously issued by the Tribal regulatory agency, final review and sign-off by the EPA is required. We have now also completed preparation of all the required responses to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers on our 404 Water Permit application and expect to submit the documents this week. A 404 Permit is required when waters of the United States will possibly be impacted by a development. Our filing includes responses to public comment and analysis of alternatives to minimize the impact. In Cortina’s case the impact will be approximately .615 acres of waters - just above the minimum threshold for requiring a permit. Once Earthworks receives the sign-off from the EPA and the 404 Permit it will move forward with processing an application for an Authority to Operate and all other required construction related permits concurrently. Based on the current projected schedule, a construction decision could be made as early as the second quarter of 2012. Management attended a recent conference in Los Angeles, California, on the current energy conversion technologies (CT’s) available and will be contacting some of the companies which own the CT’s on their possible application at the Cortina integrated waste management facility. While technology development continues to advance in the energy-from-waste market it will remain on the horizon in the short term as regulatory issues are settled in California. Management believes there is no question the waste industry is at a cross roads in North America with respect to interest in renewable energy and bio-fuels. However, landfill technology will continue to be central to secure storage and long term disposal options in the immediate future. We remain confident of our plans for Cortina and look forward to working with the Cortina Band and various agencies in bringing this development to fruition.
