I think it's very unlikely that downwards movement on the C's is due to shorts. Borrowed shares on the C's only show total as 62 K. Most of the other pref's are probably similar.

Instead look to fellow traders wanting to buy more cheap. If you are into conspiracy theories, it could be the company too ... would make sense but doubt they would do it :).
