Interesting ArticleThe new face of money transfer....hmmmm. M-PESA Surpasses Western Union for Transactions Processed - IMF ReportA report from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reveals that mPayment provider M-PESA now processes more transactions in Kenya than Western Union does globally, according to Finextra. The data is part of an IMF investigation into the economic forecast for Sub-Saharan Africa. The IMF, which calls M-PESA "resounding technological innovation" in the report, says the organization now supplies mobile banking facilities to more than 70 percent of the country's adult population.Yet rather than being at odds M-PESA and Western Union are actually partners. Western Union in March announced that consumers can now send money directly to the mobile “wallets” of Safaricom M-PESA subscribers in Kenya from 45 countries and territories – the first service of its kind in the world. Kenyans living abroad transferred US$642 million home in 2010, compared to US$609 million in 2009, according to the Central Bank of Kenya. There are links in the article. Find it here:https://pymnts.com/M-PESA-Surpasses-Western-Union-for-Transactions-Processed-IMF-Report/After reading this, I did a little bit of digging. Kenya has a population of 38MM. Ghana, VSI's SaaS partner announced last month, has 25MM people. Afghanistan, which is a VSI partner with M-PESA, has 24MM people.Read back in VSI news releases to unearth this: Many more people in Africa use mobile phones than in any part of the world. There are currently over 500 million mobile subscriptions and mobile penetration has risen from just five percent in 2003 to well over 50 percent today. Mobile phone usage in Africa has increased dramatically over the past five years, but there is still potential for enormous growth. Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania and Cote d’Ivoire have also accounted for the change in the distribution of mobile connections. The Ghana Business News report states that the increase in the number of mobile cellular subscriptions over the last five years has defied all predictions and Africa remains the region with the highest mobile growth rate.2 Ninety five percent of mobile phone subscriptions in Africa are prepaid.
