RE: Is WIN getting paid on SmartMeters?I think that the licensing issues around the "smart meters" opportunity is much larger than, as you saySRK, "addressing this market as the roll-out is happening now"........the real opportunity IMHO involves machine-to-machine (M2M) applications where an M2M device is defined as one that is able to autonomously reply to requests for data or autonomously transmit data contained within the device. Technical requirements of M2M applications include such features as low power, support for large numbers of devices, short burst transmissions, device tampering detection and reporting, etc,.... Various groups such as the IEEE802.16p and The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ERSI) are currently working on necessary standards delelopment with the goal to define an end-to-end M2M service platform and intermediate service layer standards, which will support multiple vertical M2M applications such as health-care monitoring ; automated services on customer devices ; public safety sensors ; etc., in addition to the smart metering that you mentioned.
The "White Space" area that you referenced this week in terms of FCC testing, is also a critical aspect of M2M communication, where a number of regulators around the world have announced their intention to open up the spectrum in the 400-800MHz band.
I anticipate that most leverage to Wilan in this area will occur after the standards have been agreed,
