STATOIL has suffered a setback with an unsuccessful wildcat on Brazilian frontier Block BM-CAL-10, according to a source close to the operation.
The block, in a deep-water section of the Camamu-Almada basin, is operated by Statoil, holder of a 45% stake. The Norwegian company is partnered by Petrobras, with 40%, and Canada’s Gran Tierra Energy, with 15%.
The wildcat 1-STAT-7-BAS was located in a water depth of 1890 metres, directly off Salvador, the capital of Bahia state.
Statoil used a Seadrill-owned drillship to drill a well that was targeted for 2651 metres. The same rig will be used to drill a well on neighbouring Block BM-CAL-7, where Petrobras has a 60% operating stake, Statoil has 30% and Gran Tierra has 10%.
Statoil is preparing to drill an important exploration probe on the southern extension of the Peregrino heavy oilfield complex in the first half of 2012.
The results of the well will determine the scope for additional development.
