There is a reason that one chooses to start a public company over a private enterprise. Unlimited other people's money. Even large established public companies can care more about themselves than their shareholders when it gets down to brass tacks... example, Nortel. Not as frequent, but it happens. The unveiling of true character usually comes when management are about to exit, stage left. It is far safer to assume that management has all the human weaknesses for money and power, and realize that added risk to any product or idea they are promoting when you pick stocks. Even if they have been good boys and girls in past ventures, doesn't mean that they are imune to a 'grab and run' if the circumstances present themselves.
I know... it's a very cynnical attitude, but that seems to be the legacy of real world of public companies. There are too many opportunities in a public company to legally and outright, just take your money.
