RE: RE: Marinetraffic If only 4 are shown more then likely only 4 are there. International shipping law and Insurance Companies require that a ship over a certain tonnage have an active AIS at all time. More then likely given the turmoil on deck, most went got their load and high tailed out of there as fast as possible.
Besides, Iranain or should I say any military / navy organization does not need the AIS signal to track a ship, they have very usefull radars and tracking satellites.
I don't think BW Athena is an exception and I highly doubt it can go to sea with the AIS transponder turned off.

While I can appreciate your response about the "usefull radars" that the Iranians have - there is one major difference - radar does not identify the name or type of ship. If some whackjob government decided that they wanted to make a political statement, it wouldn't want to accidently fire upon the ship of an ally, or an American/British warship - which would mean they would need visual contact of that ship. Radar would allow them to identify that there is a ship there - but who? And being that they are at sea level, any ground based radar would be significantly limited in its range - the horizon. And I don't remember ever hearing that the Iranians had the ability to launch satellites, let alone spy satellites. Seeing a potential target or 2 leave port in Saudi Arabia and head twards the staight would give the Iranians ample time to plan.
As for the number of ships - While I'm sure ships are avoiding the persian gulf as much as possible, if you consider that 1/4 of all sea bourne oil travels through the staight of Hormuz, there would be more than 4 tankers just moored/filling up. If you look off the coast of any major/minor oil hub - there are dozens of tankers both on route and moored. So I think 4 is hardly enough in any conceivable situation. Also look up and down the coast of Saudi Arabia, there isn't 1 ship of any kind listed, and I'm sure there are more than zero ships off their coast.
So I reiterate, Our little ship the BW Athena could leave Dubai and we wouldn't know.
