There is more going on here in terms of "paid political friends" than meets the eye. When and if this thing ever gets going there will be a need for infrastructure to be built in PNG. That is where and how the politicians can  be paid off. Companies will be selected for infastructure and those companies may be paid the legitimate rate or more. Those companies will pay off the politicians so lots for them to pocket. As for the environmental stuff I agree with you this was bound to happen but my trust in the power of corruption in the third world where I have worked in more than one location should allow this project to proceed. Again, does anyone know what is next? Production (using thousands of life rafts), more drilling, the boat, another financing?
