The big companies will eventually need to grow with new discoveries or purchases (projects). This deal will not add to production. By the end of this bull market there will probably be just a few huge companies at the top. This merger will make them (G&X) bigger so they won't be eaten up by the likes of BHP. But they still need to grow even if they are bigger. Xstrata had plans to grow production by 50% within the next couple of years. Glencore also had plans to buy projects. They will still need to do that. They will simply be bigger now with more muscle.

 

There are not too many mid tier companies that would have $2B+ to buy & develop Canariaco. To get bought out clean, may require one of the big boys.
