I cannot for the life of me understand the logic behind storing PV generated power into a battery.

Simple: Solar production peak occurs around noon, power usage peak is during morning rush hour and after 4pm until about 6:30pm, when those returning home crank up the A/C, the stove, and put their just purchased stuff in the fridge.

Certainly APS (EFL's customer) intends to use the BESS exactly for solar power storage.
