It is my understanding that sustaining capital is the amount that must be spent to maintain current levels of production.  It has nothing to do with funding operations "until money is being made".  There will always be a need for sustaining capital ...... when a company has cash flow, sustaining capital would be supplied  from it..... what's left may be "free cash flow".  Of course if there's no cash flow there may be a need for financing.
