I think the issue here is the nature of the growth. China was focussed on inrastructire growth before which is a heavy user of base metals. However, now they are focussing on services. These industries are high value added professions and they are not so dependent on foreign economies. These service industries, i.e Medicine, banking, financial services, consulting, Education etc, do not need billion of tons of coal, copper etc. In time, higher incomes will lead to more consumption etc, but in the short term, I think the market is saying that the great commodities boom is basically over and shortages in the past few years will now revert to more balanced markets and lower prices.

We need India to now take the baton and take up the slack. Their infrastructure needs are huge also and they have been lagging in this regard. Who knows if they will do it. So far, they have not been shown to be so capable.
