Yes I agree - but you don't mean that everyone is prepared to lie to get what they want. I mostly post to sound out ideas - sure I will make a point forcefully but I encourage anyone to constructively critique it. I find many useful posts (many more useless it is true) and many posters who provide info and perspective that is altruistic.

This is the main value of these boards. Someone will post something I had not thought of which will provoke research. The most useful information, imho, is when someone cogently highlights a negative - in investing, knowing the risks is far more important (in any business derisking is a major driver of profits).
The poster who pumps a stock and then when the shareprice collapses says it is still positive and he predicted this - these are the scum of the boards. The bashers who post nothing useful but ad hominem, insults and lies - these are the ones you ignore.
Can you explain your reference to cognitive dissonance - I know what it means but not how you are applying it here?
