Tactics that Work in Good Markets and Bad

A Day Without Europe Thursday, April 26, 2012 7:48 am

The Europeans were kind enough to stay out of the headlines on Wednesday. This allowed investors to concentrate on the attractive investment story in the US as corporate earnings are WELL above expectations. In fact, a group of us got together and collectively gave this earnings season an "A-" rating. Other investors are clearly taking notice of the same thing as shares soared markedly higher.

So our troubles are in the past? Not so fast.

Spanish and Italian debt are still too close to the ominous 6% level. The Dutch government is turned upside down over debt/austerity issues. And the French government might be next with key elections late next week.

You see, the market hates uncertainty. And until this problem is more neatly tucked away it will be hard for the US market to break out above the highs of 1420 on the S&P. The best case scenario for now is sideways. The worst case is obviously lower. But each stock will be measured on the merit of their earnings reports. So hold on to your stocks with the best earnings estimate revisions and stay away from those with suspect futures.

Best,
