From ten new conflicts detected by the Ombudsman’s Office in March, two cases are of a socio-environmental nature and need special attention: that occurring between the rural community of Mareniyoc (Ancash) andMinera Barrick Misquichilca S.A., operator of the Pierina gold mine; and that involving the rural community of San Juan de Cañaris (Lambayeque) versus the Cañariaco Copper mining company, operator of the Cañariacocopper project.
In the case of the latter, the residents have summoned for a public hearing to be held on April 15, to determine whether or not to approve the mining project.
The Ombudsman Office has identified a total of 237 social conflicts, of which, 162 (68.4%) are active and 75 (31.6%) are dormant.
